Statins are among the most widely prescribed medications in the world, and they work by inhibiting an enzyme in the same biochemical pathway your body uses to make CoQ10. A well-documented side effect is that statins can lower the body’s CoQ10 levels.
That doesn’t mean anyone should stop taking a prescribed statin โ these are important medications, and that decision belongs to you and your physician. It does mean that if you take a statin, CoQ10 is worth a conversation with your doctor.

Is CoQ10 safe? Side effects and interactions
CoQ10 is generally well tolerated. When side effects occur they’re usually mild โ some people report minor digestive upset, which taking it with food often resolves.
The more important issue is interactions, and this is where you should involve your doctor rather than the internet:
- Blood thinners: CoQ10 may interact with anticoagulant medications like warfarin. If you take a blood thinner, talk to your physician before adding CoQ10.
- Blood pressure medications: because CoQ10 has been studied for cardiovascular support, discuss it with your prescriber if you’re managing blood pressure medically.
